Play-Doh Valentine For Classroom Exchanges
This Play-Doh valentine is so cute to give out to little kids. It's also an easy DIY valentines for classroom exchanges. And what kid doesn't love a colorful can of Play-Doh?
We like to make things at home. I know there are a million and one different classroom valentine treats and cards to buy at the stores these days. It's hard not to get overwhelmed by them each time we step into a store.
A DIY Valentine Kids Can Make
However, my little crafter likes to make things for her friends. I am also a huge fan of encouraging her to make her own gifts to give away. Plus, she is always looking for reasons to use her hot glue gun.
This year, she wants to give out little Play-Doh containers to her classmates. We love Play-Doh, and I think it's so great for kids to play. Not only do kids use their creativity, it helps them develop finger muscles for writing and more.
Together, we came up with a play dough valentines that she could make herself. It's a simple cut and glue project.
We designed these printable valentines play dough labels together. She picked nice bright colors, and used clear big capital letters so other little kids can easily identify the writing.
I offered her minimal help while she put these together. Really, I just sat and watched her get on with it.

And that's it! Easy peasy, right?
We love this cordless hot glue gun, and my four-year-old can use it by herself.
How to Make this Play Dough Valentine
It's so simple to put this play dough valentine treat together.
First, chose the Play-Doh
These Play-Doh Valentines labels are made for 1-oz containers. This is the set of Play-Doh you see in the photos.
This 65-Pack of Play Doh is a cupboard staple in our home. I've given them out in goodie bags, birthday presents, stocking stuffers, for halloween, when we have play dates, and more. They are super special because the pack comes with glittery and confetti Play-Doh too.
You can also buy a smaller box with 42 cans of 1-ounce Play-Doh. But this pack doesn't contain the glittery and confetti Play-Doh cans.
Second, write names on the printable valentines
There's space to write a child's name is on the bottom of the label, next to the heart. It's easiest to write the names on the labels before you cut them out.
I know kids always want to jump into the fun stuff like cutting and gluing, but once the labels are cut and attached on the Play Doh cans, the writing surface is no longer flat. Writing names before cutting and gluing gives kids the opportunity to practice writing on a flat surface.
There is no space to write a "to:" name. Our kids teachers have always asked us to leave the "to:" field blank, so I didn't include a spot for it. Kids can simply drop one play dough container into each valentine box, without worrying about names.
Third, cut out the printable labels
Once your child has written their name on the printable, cut out carefully along the outside of the printed heart border.
At first, my little one cut right across the heart border, thinking it functioned as a dotted line. Oops. Don't forget to mention it to your kid if they will be cutting it out themselves.
I made the borders a bit smaller in diameter than a play dough cap, so there's wiggle room for wobbly scissor skills.
Fourth, stick the labels on the Play-Doh caps
We stuck the printable Play-Doh valentines cards on the lids directly with a drop of hot glue gun.
She applied the hot glue drop directly to the center of the Play Doh cap. It wasn't hot enough to melt the plastic lid.
She loves this cordless glue gun and uses it on a nearly daily basis for small projects and crafts.
If you want to skip the hot glue gun, little kids always love using glue dots too. For glue dots, it will be easier to apply it to the back of the printable play dough valentines, then stick it on the lids.
Easy Play Dough Classroom Valentine to Make
And that's it! This is a very simple valentines to make for classroom exchanges. My 4-year-old child did it mostly all by herself. I like giving her opportunities to feel proud of their creations, and this is a perfect project.
She made these valentines over the course of a few days. She took the printable labels to her room and worked on them by herself when she wanted to. I supervised the gluing, but she completed them all by herself.
