Can a Peace Lily be Variegated?
Yes! A variegated Peace Lily is a gorgeous plant. The variety I have, and in the photos, is a Spathiphyllum Domino. Every single leaf has white variegation on it.
Different Names for Variegated Peace Lily
A variegated Peace Lily goes by the names: Spathiphyllum Domino, Domino Peace Lily, and Spathiphyllum Wallisii 'Domino'.
Jet Diamond Peace Lily is another variegated variety that is sometimes sold in stores. The Jet Diamond Peace Lily is grown by Costa Farms, but I haven't seen them in stock lately. They look incredibly similar, and I'm not sure I would even be able to spot the differences.
Variegated Peace Lily Domino Appearance
The Spathiphyllum Domino Peace Lily has striking dark green leaves with various sized white markings. The colors and patterns on the leaves make this plant a show stopper.
Color
Some leaves are dark green with little flecks of white. Other leaves have full creamy white streaks on them. Each leaf has a different pattern than the next, and all are equally interesting.
Shape and size
Like other spathiphyllum, this plant has large lance shaped leaves. The leaves grow on stems around 12-inches long. Overall, the plant can grow to around 2-3 feet tall.
Texture
Unlike the common Peace Lily, the Domino variety has leaves are mostly textured to the touch. I tried to capture it in the photo, but it is hard to tell.
The textured leaves almost feel like thick crepe paper with an eggshell sheen. The fun texture adds another dimension to the already unique leaves.
How To Take Care of a Variegated Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum Domino)
How do you take care of a Peace Lily Domino? It's easy to get into a good care routine for a variegated Domino Peace Lily. Three basic requirements:
- Light: Medium to bright, indirect light for best growth.
- Water: Water frequently, before the soil completely dries out.
- Soil: Well-draining potting mix that retains moisture.
Keep reading for more details on each of these requirements.
How Much Light Does Peace Lily Domino Need?
Like most houseplants, a Domino Peace Lily likes indirect light best. It requires medium to bright indirect light for best growth.
While a Spathiphyllum Domino can tolerate less light than many other houseplants, it is still happiest when it receives plenty of light. If you want to encourage striking variegation in the leaves, it's best to keep a Domino Peace Lily in a bright spot in the house.
Also, try to keep the plant out of direct sunlight because the leaves can burn.
Where Should I Put a Peace Lily in My House?
A Peace Lily requires medium to bright indirect light, so it's not too picky about where it sits in a house. We have several Peace Lily plants, and I've tried them in different spots in the house.
My Domino Peace Lily sits in our open living room, which has large south facing sliding door windows and west facing windows. The plant sits far away from the windows, at least 15 feet away. In that spot, it is very happy and continues to grow new leaves.
I have 2 common Peace Lily plants in a room with north facing windows. The plants never receive direct sunlight in the rooms and are happy too.
At one point, I placed my common Peace Lily in a fairly dark bathroom. The bathroom has one small west facing window, and the window is covered by an awning outside. The Peace Lily struggled in that spot because it was just a bit too dark.
What Kind of Soil Does A Spathiphyllum Domino Need?
A Domino Peace Lily is a very easy to take care of plant and is not super picky. A general indoor houseplant potting mix would be fine for it.
My variegated Peace Lily is in Miracle Grow Tropical Potting Mix, with a bit of pumice and lava rocks mixed in. The addition makes the potting mix a bit more chunky, so the plant is less susceptible to root rot.
How Often Do You Water a Variegated Peace Lily
A variegated Peace Lily requires fairly frequent watering. It does not like the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
Keep in mind though that the roots also do not like to sit in water. So ideally, a Peace Lily requires frequent watering in a pot with drainage hole.
Peace Lily Drooping
The variegated Domino Peace Lily is an incredibly dramatic plant. Therefore, it will tell you when it needs watering.
When the plant needs water, the leaves will completely fall over and droop, like in the photo above. When it does, it looks super sad and I always panic. But the worry is never needed. After giving the Peace Lily some water, the leaves perk back up.
Ideally, try to water the plant before the leaves completely droop. But often the plant seemingly goes from happy to droopy in a blink of an eye. For example, before bed, I'll think the leaves might be starting to look droopy. And by morning, the leaves are dramatically limp.
Is a Spathiphyllum Domino Rare?
The variegated Peace Lily sat on my wish list for several months before I finally ordered one online. One weekend, I even went to four different plant shops looking for this plant.
A variegated Peace Lily is not an exceedingly rare plant, but I don't frequently see it in stores. I like to think of it as an overlooked and under appreciated plant.
When I do see it at stores, it's usually fairly priced at about $20 for a 6-inch pot.
Where to Buy Spathiphyllum Domino?
Eventually, I bought my variegated Peace Lily from Canopy Plant Co. However, I don't see it listed on the website at the moment. It's worth checking if you are after this plant though. I've always receive healthy houseplants when I order from there.
Costa Farms also used to sell a variegated Jet Diamond Peace Lily online. But it's not listed anymore either.
Currently, you can buy a variegated Peace Lily on Amazon from California Tropicals. It's available from other sellers online too. It's not a pricey houseplant, and it's very resilient. So it should handle the shipping fine.
