Growing Up Golfing With My Family
Growing up, I spent a lot of time on the golf course with my parents. At least 3 nights a week, you could find us at the golf course or driving range. My parents are the real golfers though.
Half the time, I simply read or did homework while riding around in the golf cart with them. Or, my sister and I would walk around fishing lost balls out of the pond and collecting unbroken tees.
My parents don't remember the long hours they dragged me around the golf course with them. Or maybe my memory exaggerates.
Golf Is An Intergenerational Family Activity
I think my parents accomplished their goals though. They got to golf, we kids had plenty of outdoor time, and I learned enough golf to enjoy it. Their reach goes even further too. Now, my kids are learning to golf and my parents teach them when we get together.
After peaking in high school, and never again having the opportunity to spend 3 afternoons a week golfing, I'm only picking it up again. But my parents recently made a good point about how golf is a great family activity. They have an image of us taking the kids to play a four-person scramble.
Until then, we also can all hang out at the driving range and putting greens. We'll keep learning and having fun doing this family activity.
How Can I Make Family Golf More Fun for Kids
When my oldest kid turned 5 and started golfing, I spent a long time reflecting about how I could make golf more fun for him. As I mentioned above, I spent a lot of time putzing around golf courses growing up. Drawing on that experience, I had a few ideas.
Let kids see other players
To get started, we took him to a golf shop and let him test some clubs and putt around on the indoor green in the store. Just seeing the big shop and all the equipment interested him.
Find a nice coach and other kids to golf with
Then, we signed him up for some lessons and clinics. He loved working with a nice coach much more than me teaching him. Also golfing with other kids is lots of fun.
Find fun golf places or resorts
The clincher was taking him to Top Golf. If you've never been, it's this entertainment complex crossed with a driving range, with fancy ball dispensers, ball trackers, video replays, colorful targets, and games to play. Plus, there's food and drinks to order.
We also look for driving ranges that are different or unique. For example, multi-tiered driving ranges, or ranges where you can hit into water.
Let kids make their own decisions
Simple tasks that gave him control in relation to golfing helped too. For example, he picked out his own golf polo shirts. We like this Coolibar long sleeve golf polo for sun protection. He also picked out his own golf glove.
Because golfing can get hot and sunny, we help make sure he's dressed appropriately each time he goes to play. He likes his big hat and ice in his water bottle. I've been thinking about getting him this spray water bottle to keep cool too.
