Why Get Kids to Clean the Home in Spring?
I find the house needs the most cleaning in spring time. The house gets extra use during the winter months.
Since the weather has been cold, we have spent a lot more time indoors. The windows have also been mostly shut, so the house needs a good refreshing.
Spring is also an ideal time for kids to clean stuff out because they have grown over the winter. I'm sure they will find toys that they have outgrown. Additionally, kids can take the clothes that no longer fit out of their closets.

Spring Cleaning Chore Chart for Kids
To make this spring cleaning chore chart easy for kids to follow, I separated the tasks into three simple categories:
- House
- Toys
- Bedroom
Keep reading to see the tasks that kids can do in each category.
Kids Chore Chart Tasks For Spring Cleaning the House
For spring cleaning, here are a few tasks that kids can help out with around the house in general:
- Dust surfaces
- Sweep the porch and deck
- Wipe baseboards and window ledges
- Wipe down cabinets
- Wash the car
Dusting
Both my kids (ages 8 and 4) do the above chores regularly. They can do the first four independently. Of course, we wash the car together.
They love using the Swiffer with Extendable Handle. It's one of the hardest thing for the kids to share. We only have one in the house, so there's a high demand for it.
Sweeping
Kids find smaller sized brooms a lot more manageable. Here's one with good stiff bristles and a solid wood handle. Sweeping outside is great for kids because they only need one simple instruction: sweep away from the house.
Kids Chores Chart Tasks For Spring Cleaning Toys
For spring cleaning, kids can help do the following to clean their toys:
- Organize books
- Find toys to donate
- Get outdoor toys ready (pump bike tires, wipe down stored toys, inflate balls)
- Sort out crayons, markers, and art supplies
Be aware that it's highly likely that kids will get distracted and start playing with the toys. But taking a play break makes cleaning more fun.
Organize Books
As kids organize books, ask them to also create a pile of books they no longer read. Then, find a free little library around town to drop off the books.
Donate Forgotten Toys
We donate toys throughout the year, and spring cleaning is no different. Now is the time to take the extra effort to go through and reorganize all the toys too.
Get Outdoor Toys Ready
Welcome in spring by getting outdoor toys ready. Do the kids still fit on their bikes? Do they need up upgrade a scooter?
Kids will love this spring cleaning task. They can test bikes out, pump up balls, and set up summer backyard toys.
Clean and Organize Art Supplies
Our crayons, markers and art supplies always need regular clean outs. If we don't, we end up with a collection of art supplies that aren't usable.
Decluttering art supplies is an ideal spring cleaning activity for kids because it's simple and easy to instruct. Ask kids to test out all their markers to see which ones have dried out.
Through the course of a year, we also end up accumulating many crayons. Ask kids to sort out old, broken, or duplicate crayons.
We made recycled crayons with our old and broken crayons. Get our step-by-step tutorial with pictures.

Chore Chart Tasks for Spring Cleaning Kids Bedrooms
Kids can do the following to spring clean their bedrooms:
- Clean under the bed
- Set aside clothes that don't fit
- Wash and clean all bedding
- Straighten and declutter stuff
- Organize desk and drawers
Clean Under the Bed
Does your child know what is under their bed? Have they lost socks, toys, books or even snacks under there? Ask kids to pull out everything from under the bed to make sure something valuable (or gross) isn't trapped in the back corner.
While they are at it, give the floor underneath the bed a vacuum too.
Set Aside Clothes That Don't Fit
Spring cleaning is the perfect time for kids to clean out their closets. As kids pull out clothes to look at and/or try on, take the opportunity to refold any messy drawers.
Ask kids to create a pile of clothes that they have outgrown. Rotate back in spring and summer clothes and do any rearranging necessary so those clothes are in easy to reach spots.
Wash and Clean Bedding
Our 8-year-old is learning how to remove his own bedding, do the laundry, and put his bed back together. All this still requires supervision, but he's getting there.
Don't forget, if your kid hoards stuffies, like my little girl, now is also a good time to give any of them a needed bath.
Straighten and Declutter Stuff
Ask your kids to also go through all the stuff in their room and see if there's anything to declutter, straighten up, dust, or discard.
It might help if you set a specific goal, such as, "find 5 things to put back in their place."
Organize Desk and Drawers
Ask kids to spring clean their desk and drawers. Are there pencils that are no longer functional? Is there a stack of scrap paper to recycle? Can you recycle old school work?
