How to Rim a Glass with Sparking Sugar Sprinkles
It takes two easy steps to rim a glass with sprinkles.
- First, spread some honey on the top rim of the glass.
- Second, gently dip the glass rim in sprinkles.
However, this is one of those recipes where details and quality matter. After making sprinkled rimmed glasses several times, and with different kids, I'll share some helpful tips and tricks.

What to Use to Get the Sparkling Sugar Sprinkles to Stick to the Glass?
First, you need to use something sticky to get the sprinkles to stick to the glass rim. There are a few options you can chose from:
- Honey
- Maple Syrup
- Corn Syrup
Our favorite method is to use honey. We always have some honey in the house, and it holds the sprinkles super well. While it adds a tiny bit of honey flavor, our kids like it.
Maple syrup works, but it is a little more runny. As such, it's harder to spread without making a mess.
If you really don't want any flavor, corn syrup would add just a plain sweetness.
How to Spread the Honey on the Glass Rim?
The best method is to use a popsicle stick to spread the honey along the top rim of the glass.
You can give the kids a tiny bowl of honey. Or, simply squeeze a few drops directly on the popsicle stick. Only a tiny bit of honey is needed.
Over the many times we have made this, we have tried using small paint brushes, pastry brushes, and a butter knife to spread the honey. In our experience, the popsicle stick wins hands down. It's easy to control, and it spreads a very precise and thin layer of honey.
Where to Spread the Honey on the Glass Rim?
The kids try to spread the honey just on the top rim of the glass. When the kids focus on spreading honey only on the top of the rim, enough honey gets all around the edges too.
When I've directed the kids to spread on the side of the rim too, the sprinkles end up going on too thick on the outside of the glass cup. As a result, it makes a mess when they drink.

What Kind of Sprinkles to Use to Rim a Glass?
Sparkling sugar is the best for rimming glasses. Sparkling sugar is a coarse-grained sugar. It comes in so many different colors.
We use sparking sugar to rim glasses because it:
- is large enough so it has a sweet crunch,
- is not too hard to bite,
- doesn't have a sandy texture,
- comes in beautiful colors, and
- stays on the glass rim very well.
For the photos, I used purple, pink, silver and blue to make my own mix of colors. However, you can buy rainbow sparkling sugar.
We Don't Recommend Using Nonpariels or Jimmies
We have also done sprinkle rimmed glasses with nonpariels sprinkles and rainbow jimmies too. Though both types of sprinkles look super colorful and cute on the rims, they didn't work well once you added drinks into the glasses.
Mainly, the kids say it tastes really weird when nonpariels and jimmies mix with their drinks. Moreover, they don't like the texture of those sprinkles in their drinks. Surprisingly, the kids didn't even finish their drink.

Review of Sprinkle Rimmed Glasses by a Kid
I think the sprinkled rimmed cups were really fun because you get to eat sprinkles. Sparkling sugar taste so good with drinks.
I think its really fun making it because you get to put honey on a cup and roll it around. Like, rolling in a ball pit.
